Can I Import MS EXch .pst Files Into Vista Windows Mail?

Up on Vista. LOVE IT. Wanting to access old Microsoft Exchange .pst
files through Windows Mail. File>import > messages and choose message
type. It says

Message cannot be imported from the MAPI client

Any advice on how to access old mail data through new Window Mail on
Vista?

Thanks in advance.

Pst-files can only be read by Microsoft Office Outlook. Configure Outlook
with the pst-files and then use import from within Windows Mail.

I have a machine running Vista and Office 2007. So good-old "Outlook"
is not on my machine. I looked at the URL you provided above and
didn't see a download link for getting old-fashioned Outlook. Can you
provide a direct link for me to download the version of Outlook that I
would need to accomplish what you've said above? Thanks in advance!

Windows Mail is what's offered with the version of Office I have.
Outlook is not. So is there any other place I can go to just download
stand-alone Outlook? Maybe even an earlier version?

Please advise.

Well, Outlook is a pay-for program, so, there isn't a legal download of the
whole program, but there is the trial of Office 2007 that you could
download, install, import, and uninstall.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/pr...741481033.aspx is the url
for the demo.

If I already have Office 2007 already loaded on my Vista machine,
won't it realize that when I try to download the demo/trial version
you're suggesting? Can I BUY stand-alone Outlook?

Please advise. And thanks in advance.

Yes, you can buy stand-alone Outlook -
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1162593933838
for instance.

I forgot about the fact that full office was installed, so no, I wouldn't
overlay the full with the demo. Uninstalling full, installing the demo,
importing, uninstalling the demo, installing full would probably take 4
hours, give or take. Outlook runs $100+ (might be cheaper at stores like
Costco, or at the now 50% going out of business compusa).

FH - we're almost there - is there an official place where I can buy
it (stand-alone Outlook) online and then just download and install it?
Thanks!

That, unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find. Based on
http://www.microsoft.com/office/offers/default.mspx, I would say no.
