Hello. I would like to hide some desktop icons from certain users. I have a
windows 2000 SP4 machine to do this. Yes, I am the admin
I think it has to do with group policy but seems like I am not able to find
which windows admin tool to run to configure this. Cheers!!

So ... you don't know the feature where to configure it? A first place
to stop by would be:
http://www.gpoguy.com - this should give you a first idea of how group
policies actually work. To configure GPs, you can run "gpedit.msc" on
Start->Run.

cheers,

Florian

Thanks for tthe GP's resources Florian, but I want to find a more
straightforward answer to my question. If I wanted I could find and download
tutorials about GP's or go to the library and rent a "Mastering 2000" book.
Maybe my question has to do with the user profiles and not with GP's, I don't
know. What I know is that I do not want to read some Gigabytes of text to in
order to find out how to hide the desktop icons from the users. In the future
I ll buy a book, but for the time I just need to resolve my issue.

Maybe my thread should be moved somehow to the General, by an operator,
before I find out where it actually belongs to.

To remove *all* desktop icons, see the following group policy:
"UserConf\AdmTempl\Desktop\" "Hide and disable all items on the
desktop". You can "activate" the GP by browsing through your Active
Directory, right click an OU and create a new one.

If you only want to delete some of the desktop items, you will have to
write yourself a logon script and deploy it via GP, since you won't want
to check all profiles for unwanted icons.

Another thing could be a standard profile with a standard desktop for
users, which is write-protected so that no one can add new icons.

Sorry, but your question is not that trivial that it could be done with
a few hand moves and a few clicks...

cheers,

Florian
