Using xp home and at the moment I ahve 2 hdd 40gb each attached to the pri
ide cable. My cd rom is attached to the secondary cable as secondary master.
Just wonder if I can connected another hdd (300gb) as secondary slave? Will
it impair the pc performance? thanks

Shouldn't - but there are certain combinations of PATA devices that
have issues. Impossible to say if your combination of devices would
cause problems, one of those hook it up and see type situations.
As an alternate solution, I'd buy a inexpensive SATA controller card
and get a SATA-II drive instead of PATA. Most controller cards are
~$30.00 or so. There are both RAID & Non-RAID SATA cards
so be sure to get a Non-RAID type for your use.

On the secondary IDE cable connect the hard drive as the master and connect
the CD-ROM as the Slave.

Actually, it makes no difference which device on the IDE channel 1
is the Master and which is the Slave. Master/Slave modes are
simply to differentiate between the 2 devices for the channel controller.
There could be a difference if there were 2 hard drives on the same
channel - the Master would have higher Hard Drive Boot Order than
the Slave, but that is only the *default* Hard Drive Boot Order. That
boot order can be reset in the BIOS to give either hard drive the
higher boot order. In the OP's case, there is to be only one hard drive
on the channel, so as far as hard drives go, it will always have lower
boot order than the hard drives on channel 0. (Notice that I'm talking
about Hard Drive Boot Order, not Device Boot Order.)

Make sure your power supply can handle it.
