Most of today's cases have HDD's mounted flat.

I want to use an older case that stands the HDD on it's edge. I assume
there is no problem with that?

I hope not, or the 400+ hard drives in the systems I support at work are
going to hit problems

No problem whatsoever. Lian Li cases typically mount their drives
vertically. The advantage being that the warm air rising from the drive
below is not heating the drive above.

Sure, always format it in the position you'll be using it.

That's what Leo says on TSS so that's what I do.

good ole Leo........ I maybe doing a remote segment on that show about the disabled and accessibility in the near future....I'm
one of many people in line, keeping my fingers crossed

floppies have the same sort of problems on occasion when they are taken from a vertical flop to a horizontal

Do you recall what year that occurred?
Was the hard drive a 5 1/2" IDE?

I called Maxtor and Western Digital about that about
3 weeks ago. Their Tech Support reps said that the
orientation did not matter. The WD rep only added
that the drive should be mounted flat on one of its
surfaces - not "slanted". In my Dell Dimension
(4 1/2 years old), the 17GB 5400rpm Maxtor drive
is mounted standing on its end, right in the path of
incoming air, and I haven't had any problems with it.

That's great. They just had a good segment on a gentleman with CP and
a talking PC. I might be on the show too if I win the MOD contest!
