I use a lot of recurring tasks in Outlook to remind me of things that need
doing on a regular basis.

When I look at my task list (detailed view) there are dozens of tasks listed
which have been completed ages ago and are shown in a grey crossed through
font.

How can I best purge the system to get rid of them (preferably
automatically), but leaving the current recurring tasks intact.

What do you mean by "purge"? File or delete?

If you have a folder to file into, you could select the completed ones and
drag them to the filing folder.

So if you have a .pst (eg Archive), make a Tasks Folder in it and stuff them
in there if you want to keep them. When making the new folder change the
setting Folder contains items of type... to say Tasks. The exact wording
depends on your version which you failed to post.

Many thanks. However, is there any way I can stop them being created in the
first place?

Yes. Instead of marking the item as complete, click Delete. Outlook will
ask if you want to delete all future occurrences or just that one...tell it
just to delete that one. A new task will be generated for the next
occurrence and no record of the deleted one will be left behind. Test it
with a new recurring task (created for this purpose) to see what I mean.
