New XP Media Center laptop w/ XP sp2 incl. mm2.1 preinstalled. I, like an
idiot, went and installed an old copy of Plus! Digital Media Edition. Which
replaced MM2.1 with MM2. How can I fix this?

Plus doesn't contain MM - just some effects and transitions as I recall.

What number does it say in Help About?

If you open Movie Maker and go to...
Help / About...what version is listed?
Should say...2.1.4026.0...

Movie Maker is not on the Plus! DME
disk...installing it only adds some
additional transitions and effects to
your existing installation of Movie Maker.

Well you're correct, you have version 2...
but I'm having a hard time seeing how Plus!
DME reverted it from 2.1.

Considering that you have an OEM version
of Win XP Media Center Edition...it may be
a good idea to contact your computer mfg.
for assistance/instructions.

John,

I don't know how it happened, either - and maybe it wasn't Plus! now that I
look at what it contains. All I know now is that Gateway says Microsoft
should support this problem, while MS says it's Gateway's problem.

What should I do from here, all? Thanks again in advance.

All OEM software is the mfg's responsibility.

Anyway...I guess you could try reinstalling Win SP2...

Windows XP SP2

Or maybe the following article may be useful:

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

Good luck.

Is re-installing XP SP2 safe? Anything I need to keep in mind as I'm
performing the install? Thanks again.

One thing I'm not sure about and maybe PapaJohn
can offer some ideas.....the Media Center version
of Movie Maker has the option to burn a DVD and
you may lose that option unless the correct version
is reinstalled. This is why I suggested that you deal
with the computer mfg.

As I said before...good luck.

there's only one SP-2 disc that's used for all versions XP... if that's what
is being used, then it'll apply to the Media Center version of XP also and
shouldn't effect the DVD making process.

and you can always roll back from the SP-2 upgrade if needed
