How can I get a friendlier noise on my computer (Windows XP)

When somebody mails me a message with MSN messenger or when my
computer mails me otherwise a notification it makes a metallic peep,
which scares the daylights out of me even when I put the volume down.

Do you know how to get a friendlier tone? I heard it recently in an
office, there are some nice melodic sounds...

Thanks in advance.

Leo

Sounds are changed in Control Panel => Sounds and Audio Devices =>
Sounds

One you would be looking at is 'New Mail Notification'.
You can select from the 'Browse' button, e.g. you could try notify.wav
Click the small black triangular arrow beside your selection to test
it.
It's possible to find other sound wave files on the internet and add
them to the default folder C:\Windows\Media
Some folks even make their own by cutting pieces out of audio files
using a wave editor. For example, my Windows current startup sound in
a fade in and fade out of the first 15 seconds of Billy Idol's 'White
Wedding'.

Thanks, Claymore, it worked! You got 15 seconds of Billy Idols WW?
Must be fun!

I like the nature sounds, the birds, etc. but as I have so many birds
outside, I would be confused as to what bird beeped in my computer and
one outside my real life window! RLOF!

Thanks again!

Leo

Nah. Too wimpy by far. What you really need is a sample of the "urgent"
telephone ring from "Our Man Flint". That one will really get your heart
going... <g>
