When attaching attachments in hotmail, outlook express or any email
systems. The Create/Insert attachment dialog box always default to list
view. I would like to specify this Create/Insert attachment to always open
in Details View. Is there anyway to do this eg. customize, optioning,
changing registry keys????

All these different groups list yet not the one most likely to be able to
give you a response. Please try this question on the windowsxp.customize
newsgroup.

Open Windows Explorer/View tab/now select Details
Now click Tools/folder options/View tab click Aply to all folders button
and reset all folders.

I've don't this "Apply to all folders" for many years. And I have used
"Apply to all folders" details on every computer I used. It still doesn't
work for the Insert/Create attachment dialog box.
Why doesn't Microsoft program the function I wonder???

I don't think anyone has found a way to accomplish this yet.

Hi,

Are you referring to the settings that Explorer preserves. explorer can
remember the settings only upto 400. So you will have to increase the size so
that Explorer can remember. to do that you can use tweak ui and then go to
the explorer settings.

Read about it here.
http://www.winxpsolution.com/Tweakuixppro.aspx
and search for the phrase 400.

Why would they build this feature in? What about people who don't want it. I view everything in Tiles but I certainly don't want common dialogs in tiles (or details - I want nothing in details). So should it have seperate settings for common dialog and folder windows or the same.

There are times I'd like to see it in that dialog box but I would want it to
be my option to see details and not default as in click button to see
details or some such thing.

I'm just pointing out that just because one person wants it doesn't mean everyone does. And to design a thing like this requires decisions.

1. Apply one setting to all common dialogs - this is what it does now but basically only sorting, show/hide hidden and similar settings. Only Sort is a folder specific setting. These are the global defaults for all folders. Sort is pretty much overridden by more specific settings everywhere but Quick Launch and Open dialogs.

2. As above but dialog specific settings.

3. Use saved folder settings. This is a bad option.

4. Have another set of settings. More space, extra time to boot and shutdown. More to go wrong, more questions to answer on why my saved dialog settings don't work. Please NO.

But a point needs to be made. File Open dialogs (which is where this will have most effect) shouldn't be used at all. We haven't been application centred since before 95. In 3.1 we started to become Document centred and 95 continued it. In ME, before we had transitioned fully to documented centred we started changing to Task Centred (Help & Support etc). So one should use alternative methods to open files. By double clicking them. I believe MS should have yanked file open dialogs (though not Save dialogs) to force people to use Windows the way it was meant to be used.

But you still see the people who refuse to change. Like File Manager. They think explorer is a file manager but it isn't one - it's a shell browser. Anyway with LH user documents won't even be files.

No question, I agree, David. I was just pointing out, I would like to have
the option but I certainly wouldn't want it to be the default.

I find "File Open," is still a useful option, it saves having to run with
Explorer and/or My Documents always open and saves a lot of time switching.
I don't think they've come up with a viable alternative that would allow
users to open another file from within an application, hence, this legacy
persists though I suppose you could just use the "run" box on the Start
menu.
