.... with more than one row at the top that doesn't scroll? I've done it
before, but have completely forgotten how I did it. The Freeze Panes menu
item seems to only allow freezing the first row and/or the first column.

Just place your cursor UNDER the row you want to freeze and then do Freeze
Panes...

I can't find a "freeze panes" command that does anything except display a
dropdown that has "Unfreeze Panes", "Freeze top row", and "Freeze first
column." Is there a diferent Freeze Panes somewhere else? I'm running ....
Oh well, I'm running a version that no longer has "HELP/ABOUT." I don't
know where to look to find my version....

The fact that the drop down only has "Unfreeze panes" means you already HAVE
frozen the pane.
Click it and a) the pane will unfreeze and b) the "Freeze Pane" command will
magically re-appear.
If there's no "menu" bar then you probably have 2007 (but might also have
2010)

1. Click into the cell that is immediately below and to the right of
the split that you want.

2. Window » Split.

3. Move either or both bars, if necessary.

4. Window » Freeze panes.

5. Save the workbook.

But if you don't have Help » About, either you have some pretty
aggressive macros in a startup file or your Excel is hosed and needs
repair.

Aha. Thanks. Yes, I had the first column frozen.... Also the top row, but
I added rows and needed to change the top row. Thanks much.

To find the version if you don't see Help>About which is a 2003 and earlier
feature.

2007 does not have a Help>About so it is quite possible OP's Excel is not hosed.

True, but he said "Freeze Panes menu item" so that would rule out
2007 and later. Maybe though he used "menu" for "ribbon". In that
case he would have 2007 or later, and I agree there's nothing wrong
with the absence of Help » About.
