Upon setting up my new XP computer the popup ads began
furiously. I installed McAfee Firewayy to no avail. I went
into regedit to disable/delete Messenger. I thought if I
didn't empty recycle bin I could easily restore if I
noticed problems. It seems regis values do not follow that
path, and now my Outlook 6.0 operates very sluggishly, and
McAfee Security is non functional. If I go into computer
via my wifes identity the deletions I made are intact I
thought I could copy from her and paste into my identity
but that option is not available with a right click of
mouse inside registry. I thought I'd just re-install
Windows and find the idiots at Dell didn't send
a "Certificate of Authenticity" with my Windows XP disc.

What next ???

Instead of postulating over something that can hardly be deemed 'life
threatening', i.e popup ads, please refrain from suggesting that Microsoft
and Dell are idiots because at this point in time you have elevated yourself
to Idiot #1 by your actions.. call Dell and be nice to them.. explain that
you have a problem.. they will help you.. when your pc is back up and
running, subscribe to something like WINXPNEWS (they do a weekly newsletter
and it is FREE), read it, learn from it, ask them questions.. always before
carrying out a procedure, if you are not sure about what to do, ask first..
you will have a much calmer time with your pc that way..

Dell put it's Certificate of Authenticity right on the computer case it is a
little sticker with the CD key on it

Can you do system restore form windows <go the start button> click on <Help
and Support> then under <Pick A Task> click on
<Undo changes to your computer with system restore> And pick a date when
everything was working.
To stop the popup ads Go to <Control Panel> Then <Administrative Tools> then
<Services> and go down to Messenger Right Click on it and go to properties
under startup type change to Disable and click on Apply

Thanks for the suggestion and info. I did do the system
restore and it worked. So far it's the first thing I've
found about XP that's an improvement over 98. I'll check
the computer case for that COA.
