I am considering a scanner that requires a USB 2.0 port
speed. How can I find out what the port speed is?

Thank you for any insight provided.

The scanner will work on any USB port because USB 2.0 is
backward compatible. To check your system's actual speed,
look in device manager to see the hardware/driver specs.
The BIOS also probably must be set to the proper speed if
your USB is on the motherboard.

You can add a USB 2.0 PCI card if your present USB is 1.1.
(You can get a combo card with USB 2.0 and Firewire).

Also, you can use the Bel Arc Advisor www.belarc.com to see
a report on your hardware/software. AIDA32 also reports
details of the system.

I have the USB port in a relatively new computer. The
scanner says it requires 2.0. I just want to know how to
find out whether it is already configured for 2.0. I
don't want to change anything. I just need to know (not
assume) so that I don't purchase something I can't use. I
also need to check the same thing on someone else's
computer so I need to know where to look.

Any USB device will work on any USB port. If both the port
and the device are USB 2.0 and the system is properly
configured it will run as fast as 480 mbps. If you have a
USB 2.0 port and a USB 1.1 device it will run at 12 mbps....
On my Intel motherboard there was a BIOS setup option for
USB port speed, the default WAS NOT USB 2.0...

If your computer does not have USB 2.0 (not all do, even
"relatively new") you can buy PCI cards to add USB 2.0
and/or Firewire ports. If you do this it makes sense to get
the combo card and add both types of fast connection.

Open Device Manager, look at the USB Host Controllers. If the word
"Enhanced" appears, it is Hi-Speed USB (formerly USB 2). If the word
"Standard" appears, it is USB (formerly USB 1.1).

Thank you for your help. I checked but neither the word
Enhanced nor Standard appears. Is there some other way I
can find out?
