I'd like to make an MP3 file out of a WMV video, but first I need to extract
the audio. Suggestions?

Probably easier to do with WM Encoder:

Extracting audio can be done in the encoder (as March Hare suggests), but
it's also possible in MM2.
In order to do this:
- Import the wmv file into Movie
- Drag the video file down to the Audio/Music track on the timeline
- Save the movie (which by default will save to a WMA file - extracting the
audio)

You'll need to use another tool to convert it to mp3 (The Plus! audio
convertor will do this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/plus/PlusHome.asp)

the EASIEST way is actually this. select the clip with
the movie and copy it. then select the Sound/Music line
where u can add a naration to a movie(third line)paste it
by right clicking. because that line accepts only music
the music from the movie will go there. then simply
delete the movie clip and what u get is the music from
the video. then save it as .wma

You can extract audio from video using Video mp3 Extractor PRO (http://geovid.com/Video_mp3_Extractor_PRO/). It takes mp3 from avi, asf, wmv.
