I want to supplement the capacity of my C: drive in my Notebook with
an external USB hard drive, both formatted in NTFS.

Can an external NTFS formatted USB drive be mounted as a folder of C:
(also formatted in NTFS)?

What happens when the external USB drive is not connected to the
computer?

Any hint?

hello juan,

The usb harddrive is viewed
as a usb flash drive.

So instead of plugging in a
small flash drive like a 1 gig pocket drive,
your usb harddrive is much larger.

When you plug it into your laptop
then a new folder appears in explorer
automatically.

When you disconnect, the explorer will
not indicate a folder.

What you should keep on the usb device
are regular files, pics, documents, backups, etc....

If you install software in windows and
make a program files folder on the
removable harddrive (usb), then it will
cause problems.

Make sure you research the quality
of the usb harddrive you plan to get.
Carefully review customer feedback and
avoid namebrands that are unknown.

Also, avoid cheap prices because it may be
a strong indication that the product is
being discontinued or the manufacturer
is going out of business.

If you find one you like double
check with Google and
Microsoft.com regarding issues arising
from the device drivers. You might want
to post your selection here and see if
anyone on this newsgroup has experience
with the make and model you want to choose.

Yes, an external USB hard drive can be mounted to an empty NTFS Folder
on another drive (volume mount point or NTFS mounted drive). When the
drive is disconnected the mount point will still be visible on the C:\
drive but if you try to access it you will get an "Access Denied"
message with a mention that the folder has been moved or deleted. When
you replug the drive the contents will (should) show again in the mount
point.
