Somewhere along the upgrade path Irfanview not only assigned itself to open
almost all image files but started changing what they're called in the
folder details view, from JPG to "Irfanview JPG File", BMP to "Irfanview BMP
File", etc.

Apart from the effrontery of the act, it also means I have to keep that
column 9 letters wider than I'd like, sheer wastage since I can already tell
it's an "Irfanview ... File" by the little red logo attached in the name
column.

Where can I edit these back to display simply JPG File, etc?
I've looked in Folder Options / File Types, and the files are all JPG File,
etc. rather than the annoying "Irfanview xxx".
(I do find the "Irfanview xxx" under Associated File Types if I want to
define a new registered file type in the Create New Extension box. But that
doesn't explain why, for instance, JPG shows as simply "JPG File" in Folder
Options but "Irfanview JPG File" in the Explorer window itself.)

And yes, I know I can set the Name column to include the full extension, but
do like to have the Type column as well, for instance to sort by type or
just as a cleaner visual cue.

Interesting one - I've got IrfanView associated with most graphic file types
(I'm pretty sure the IrfanView set-up routine *does* ask about associations)
and like you, cannot see them listed in the Folder Options "File Types" tab
in the way they appear in Windows Explorer.

What worked for me was this:

In IrfanView, open Options then "Set file associations". Deselect the
relevant file types & close.

Back in Windows Explorer, right-click a .JPG, "Open With", Choose Program.

Find and select IrfanView in the list, put the tick ("check") in "Always use
the selected program...", click OK, rinse and repeat for .BMP, .GIF, .TIF
etc.

It'll be in the registry too - probably HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and
HKLM\Software\Classes, but I'm not in a position to log off and back on at
the moment to test it properly. The above procedure is safer - going back
into the "offending" program is a better first choice (as long as it works
for you, too) than direct registry editing.

Only very minor glitch is that I lose the cool little Irfanview icon both at
the left of the Names column and in the Tiles/Icons views. I kind of liked
having a single knock-you-in-the-eye icon for all image files, but that's a
minor hit compared to losing the "Irfanview xxx File" bloat. Besides, I
think with some playing around I can figure out how to get the icon
association back, if I can only find out where the icon itself resides. I
saw something somewhere recently :-).

factoid that the "file association" program is not necessarily the "always
open with" program. Who'd'a thunk?

Option 1

Click Start, Run. Type CONTROL FOLDERS
Click "File Types" tab
Select JPG
Click the "Restore" button.

Now, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer takes over the JPG associations.

Open IrfanView and set the association for .JPG.

(You'll be back to square one! i.e, the file type name is set to "IrfanView JPG File")

Now, edit the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IrfanView.JPG

Double-click (default) and set the file type name there.

For example, change "IrfanView JPG File" to "JPEG file"

Repeat it for other file types.

IrfanView.BMP
IrfanView.GIF

and so forth...

Thanks, Ramesh. I took Option 1, which said to use the Advanced button in
File Types dialogue (from the folder window, Tools > Folder Options > File
Types tab). Choose JPG in the Registered file types box. Except there was
no Advanced button,so, as suggested on your site,
1 - click Restore to get the Advanced button back
2 - click Advanced
3 - click Change Icon
4 - click Browse, and navigate to where my Irfanview files are,
5 - and now the step that stumped me for a bit, select the file i_view32.exe
(I kept looking for icons in their own files, not within a file)
6 - click Open, and a small collection of icons shows up and I choose the
desired one.
7 - OK your way out to the File Types tab, and click Change
8 - select Irfanview, and OK out

I now have the Irfanview icon associated with JPG files in all views
(details, icons, even tiles), yet a simple "JPEG Image" in the details view
Type column, and they open with Irfanview. Life is now sweet.
