I sent an e-mail message to a friend a few months ago. When she replied to
it, it had been severely altered so that she thinks I meant to insult her.
can an e-mail message really be intercepted by another party, alterred, and
then sent on its way? How can this be possible?

She won't even speak to me or e-mail me any messages any more...

Can you give me some information I can send to her to at least show that it
is possible without giving me any info that can be used by anyone else?

I thank you for your time.

Theoretically this is possible. I have several times received email
messages that were not addressed to me. I could have - for fun - altered
these messages, then send them on (with forged From: line) to the
original addressee. Of course I did not do that.

Sending email over the Internet is not 100% safe. Messages can get lost,
end up in the wrong hands, or get multiplied while on the way to the
recipient. The only way contents can be preserved and kept secret is by
encryption.

I would suggest that you forward your original message (as an
attachment) to the friend who received the doctored message to prove
your innocence.
