I am trying to move some Excel, Access and Outlook Express data into Outlook
(proper). When I do the File -Import and Export - Select action - Select
file type. , the machine tells me "the required translator is not installed"

Searching Microsoft's web site doesn't seem to understand this problem. Can
anyone help ?

Thanks

You need to export from OE first, then import. You do not import Excel and
Access into Outlook, since Outlook already has access to those files because
Outlook is part of Office. Note that versions of Office's Excel, Access and
other office programs must match Outlook's version to share files. You should
mention your versions and what you mean by "outlook proper." Outlook Express
and Office's Outlook are not related despite similar names. OE is a
Windows/IE program and OL is Office.

Eh? OE will export DIRECTLY into Outlook - no need to import and in fact if
you do, the modified date is changed to the date of import...

Eh? Eh? Of course you can import Excel and Access data into Outlook - it's
quite common to have contacts in either application that have been generated
by a third-party program.
The only files that Outlook can "share" in Office is for the purposes of
mail merge......

Mary,

Thank you for your rapid reply...

As with many things Microsoft, what should happen and what does happen are
not the same thing. I follow the Help instructions about (for example)
importing Excel data into Outlook (OL) 2003 (11.5608.5606) and I'm using
Excel and Access 2003. I'm not sure of the Outlook Express (that is OE)
version, as I'm looking at that problem for a friend (I don't use Outlook
Express).

As I said, Microsoft's web site / search engine doesn't tell me anything
about "translators" for Outlook and so I'm unable to move this data across at
the moment.

Your advice would be welcome....

Mary's reply was at best "not quite accurate".
You can export directly from OE to Outlook. In fact that is the ONLY place
OE will export to.....
You can import data directly into Outlook both from Access and Excel. You
need to name the data range in Excel, or do a "Save-As" as a csv file which
gets round having to name the range. Not sure about the mechanics of Access,
I'm not an Access user...
When you get the message about the translators not being installed, you
should get an option to install them. They will either be installed from the
MSOCache folder on your HDD or you should be prompted for the installation
media if you don't have an MSOCache folder...

The exporters and importers are on your Office installation CD.
