Windows XP Defragmentation Problems:

I can defragment Disks D and E but I cannot defragment Disk C; I keep
getting the following error:

The scan had been canceled because an error occurred in file
C:\DocumentsandSettings\GeorgeMayer\Cookies\george_mayer@outster[2].txt

Thanks

- Empty your Internet Explorer's Temporary Internet Files
- Use Disk Cleanup...
- Set the drive to run CHKDSK at the next reboot.
- Reboot.
- When it is done with the CHKDSK, logon and try your defrag again.

However, today I discovered a way to correct it myself; my Disk C is
currently defragging as I type this. What I did was as follows:

Click as follows:
Start
All Programs
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
and in the left drop down window Menu
Clicked on Disk Defragmenter
Help Topics
where I got to the info about CHKDSK and there was a six page print out
and on the very first page, under the heading Parameters beside the
sub heading /f "Fixes errors on the disk ...."

so I typed in chkdsk C /f

which prompted the computer to do a Check of Disk C after I rebooted it,
which is exactly what it did; when I started the computer there was a blue
screen when the Disk Check started, I could see my
C:\DocumentsandSettings\GeorgeMayer\Cookies\george_mayer@outster[2].txt error
listed, and it indicated that it would correct itself; whereas previously
disk C always stopped at 74 % of the defrag process.

I've had that happen too. Defrag takes a long time and does not look
like its progressing... I usually stop it and do:
chkdsk C: /R
The /R checks the free space too IIRC.
