Hi,

I got an old HP lasejet 2200 printer from my work donated to a local
NGO. It was connected to a work network. The NGO does not have a
network, just a single PC running windows XP. We do not have the
correct printer cable, just the network cable. Is it possible to
connect the printer to the computer with a network cable. or will we
have to but a proper printer cable?

Thanks,
Kelvin

Unless youare using a Mac you can just buy a parellel (printer) cable
or if the model is only a couple of years old a USB cable. Then you
only have to install the printer driver and you are good to go. With
one computer a network printer doesn't make much sense unless the
printer is a long way from the computer. With a network set up you
have to have a switch or a router, configure that (not a problem if it
is new) and a second network cable and then you have to configure the
printer, which its software should do.

The network cable with the printer is almost certainly a standard cable,
made to connect to a switch or router. A crossover cable would be
needed to directly connect a computer to a printer.

The LJ 2200 should have a USB port. Someone involved is likely to have
an extra USB cable, or they can be found at dollar stores. That is an
easier solution for a single computer without an existing network.
