As the web says "The DDNS (Dynamic DNS) translates a dynamic IP address to a static hostname. The DDNS is for a home or small business to host their website, access their file server remotely while they have a dynamic public IP for their Internet service". You may have two option to setup DDNS. One setup it in your router if you have one. or download a DDNS software. The DDNS service I am using is dyndns.org. Good luck!

I searched High and low on that URL and can't find anything that references how to obtain the new IP address when needed. My ISP releases/renews my IP every 12 hours.....I'm going to lose my connection at about 2:00 EST time today, and if there's anything I need to install/set-up on my home computer, I'd like to do it now, while I still have access to it. Isn't there a client or something that can find my new IP address each time it changes?
Sorry if I'm redundant or ignorant, but maybe I didn't look in the right place. Could you provide a more detailed URL for me for that site if my answer does, in fact, reside there?
By the way, Robert, THANK YOU very much for your help and thank you again in advance for any further assistance you or anyone else can provide.
Best Regards,
Greg

So how do I access my home computer from work without having to lookup my
current IP address from home (ipconfig /all) and emailing it to myself at
work so that I can punch that into the remote desktop application?
My computer at work is running WinXP Pro, as well as my 'puter at home. I
currently CAN access my home computer and actually do work, etc., but I
guess through my ISP the IP's are [?static?] for only 12 hours. I was told
by a mastermind here at work that I could use something like
www.freedns.com
to be able to avoid the hassle of constantly emailing myself the newest IP
address.
I also have CiscoVPN, but don't know if my home computer is configured for a
VPN.
My work computer goes through several firewalls, cisco routers, switches,
etc. and I manage to get out. My home computer is connected directly to my
cable internet (NO ROUTER, BIG OOPS, I KNOW, but $$ is tight right now).
So how do I either make my home address a "fake" static one so that I can
access using the same IP every time, or how do I set up a VPN at home?
Thanks
Greg
