I can't believe that anyone in this day and age would compress a hard drive.
Although it was routinely done back in the DOS/Win 3.1/Win95 days, it
wasn't particularly safe then and it certainly isn't safe now.
Whether this compression is the cause of your difficulties I can't say. We
simply do not have enough information but I suspect that anyone who thought
compressing his hard drive was A Good Thing was doing other stuff that was
detrimental to his computer's health. Your issue could be caused by
overheating and/or bad hardware components as well. Too many factors for
people who can't see the computer to untangle what you've done/got.
Test your hardware and buy a bigger hard drive if you want to run Vista.
