How can I change the default so that my emails do not expire?

I have been saving emails to an outside folder on my hard drive. I think
they are expiring, as some have disappeared after 30 days. Is there a way to
change that 30 day number? I need to keep emails longer than 30 days.

How are you saving the emails? As .msg files or in a pst?

I put them in folders, so they do not count toward my mailbox. They are in a
pst folder. They seem to disappear after 30 days. I want to change this.
