I posted this in "WindowsXP Updates" but got no response so will try here. .

I have automatic updates on. the last update was"windows malicioussoftware
removal tool (
(KB890830) when i installed it, it caused my computer to crash but i wasn't
aware that was the cause, at the time. . .after finally getting it up and
running again (used systgem restore) got the update icon in the tray again
so installed it again. .computer crashed again. . used system restore again
.. . have update icon in tray again. . this time i checked the custom install
box, unchecked the box for the update, got the window telling me checked
items will not be installed, closed window but the update icon keeps coming
back. . how can i cancell out the update and remove the icon from the task
tray . . . hope this wasn't to lengthy. . . thanks for any help with this. .

Turn off auto update. Then go to Microsoft's site via Windows update or just
type in the site on your browser address bar. (Do a manual update). When the
one you don't want is listed, don't click 'download and install'. In stead
page down a little and click 'do not show this update again'.
HOWEVER, if it were my computer I would shut down all virus programs, turn
off the firewall and try to determine why you get the problem. I don't use
virus programs, I use Windows firewall and have no problem with KB890830.

Most, but not all updates (usually listed as KBnnnnnnn) can be uninstalled
via "Add or Remove Programs".

Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > "Automatic Updates" icon. Check
the radio button labeled: "Download updates for me, but let me choose when
to install them". When the automatic updates run the yellow shield icon will
appear in the notification tray. Click the icon and the installation dialog
will appear. Check "Custom Installation". This allows you do uncheck any
automatic updates that you do not want to install.

Likewise, you can open Internet Explorer and select "Windows Updates" from
the "Tools" menu. On the web page select the "Custom" button. Let the update
engine scan your PC for updates that are installed. When the page loads you
can select an item and check the "Don't show this update again" check box to
prevent the automatic updater from attempting the installation later.

If you have items that were previously hidden using the above description,
you can uncheck them later to let them be installed.

Ronald - Regarding "...got the window telling me checked items will not be
installed,..." - you do state you checked the do not install "box" but did
you check the "box" not to have the update presented again?

Wopuld have to be done each month since the update # would change.

To stop all Automatic Updates you need to do this:

START, CONTROL PANEL, SECURITY CENTER, AUTOMATIC UPDATES,

Now check on "Turn off Automatic Updates"

This is not the best way to do but the choice is yours. I prefer to
select the Second option: "Download updates for me, but let me choose to
install them". Then I do Custom Install and select which ones I want to
install.

Hope this helps.
