HiYa,
Recently I had a computer hic-up & the results were that some of my
logical drive partitions drive letters were re-distributed (ex: *Orig*
E:\ is *Now* F:\ ; *Orig* J:\ is *Now* L:\ ; Etc,,Etc). This problem
wouldnt have so bad, but beeing that I have a "Dual OS Booting System"
-- Windows 98 & Windows XP Professional --- the drive XP was on changed
from J:\ to L:\ & therefore when the boot looked for the XP OS it wasnt
being found on J:\ & it didnt know to look elseware. Other than that I
did not loose one bit of data & all my files & folders along with thier
content were in 100% condition except now most are on new drive letters!
I did not have, and still do not have any virus or malware infestation.
I checked prior to shut down just before this happened & just after as
well (Win98 never had any problems so I luckly was able to survive
there!). The reasons for this happening is a mystery till this day, but
no matter--I had to do a clean install of the Windows XP OS, and it now
resides on the L:\ Logical Drive Partition.
The problem is this. I have been spending days getting back my 300+
programs re-registered or re-installed when necessary. Ive been doing
this from my old Startup I copied over from a backup-copy of my
WindowsXP Documents & Settings, which was saved in a safe place before
I reformatted & reinstalled XP. About 40% of all the links once double
clicked on would find the program assigned to the shortcut & worked
fine. The occassional re-registering I had to do was expected. About
10%, so far, were dead in thier tracks & wouldnt work at all, so a
clean reinstall was called for. No Problem, just time consuming. The
rest of the programs yet to be done are mostly having the same problems
mentioned before, and the most common problem is the Target drive letter
is wrong in the shortcut! Example: The Shortcut Target says "E:\program
files\winzip\winzip.exe" Start In "E:\program files\winzip" . Being
the drive letter was changed from E:\ To F:\ by changing the E to F in
both entries resolved the issue & the program would run fine most of
the time.
What I was wanting to know is there a way I can do a search somewhere
to find say all the shortcuts that are on E drive letter & bulk change
them to the F drive letter. Something like a search & replace?? I have
yet to find one, but knowing where the entries are located in the first
place is yet a mystery to me.
Anyone have any Ideas??? Your help in this would be deeply
appreciated!!
Thanks,,
