My laptop is dying.
I have managed to share all of drive c.
I have connected the laptop to my network.
I can see drive c on my desktop computer.
The laptop is a windows 2000 machine as is the desktop.
I am logged in as administrator on both machines.
I want to copy 'everything' to the desktop machine.
However certain files will surely give me a problem.
How should I do this?

Presumably you just wish to back up your data files. If so
then you should have no problem with locked files. However,
if you want to back up the whole disk, warts and all, then
you will have problems. Here are a few alternatives to do this:

- Temporarily install your disk as a slave disk in some other
Win2000/XP PC, then back up its drive C:. If you don't
have a suitable adapter, buy a 2.5" USB enclosure. They
cost less than $20.00.
- Boot the machine with a Bart PE CD (www.bootdisk.com),
then back up your disk to a USB disk or to a networked
machine, using xcopy.exe or some zip tool.
- Buy an imaging product such as Acronis, DriveImage or Ghost,
then back up your disk to a USB disk.

Keep in mind that the backed up copy of the disk will be of
little use on your new machine. Windows will most likely crash
if you try to use it.
