I am modifying a Word doc in Office 2007 and I have to place the page number
at the bottom of the page in the middle in a way that it stands at a
particular distance in centimeters from the last line and from the bottom of
the page. Does anybody know how I can do this?

The footer margin (Page Setup) establishes the distance from the bottom of
the page. The distance from the last line on the page is a much slipperier
beast: see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/BottomLine.htm.

Thank you very much for your prompt and very helpful reply. As you said
adjusting the distance between the text and page number is a real beast, but
your solution killed the beast.
Now my other problem is that these distances and top and bottom margins seem
to have a will of their own when I print the document. Of course I have
converted my doc to PDF and printed that. In the PDF format everything looks
fine but after printing the top and bottom margins get bigger. Do I have to
change the settings on the printer?

When you print a PDF, note the settings in Adobe's Print dialog. Often they
are set for some amount of scaling (perhaps because the last thing you
printed was something with very tiny margins that would have been cut off if
printed at 100%).
