Camera wizard does not work

I connect my camera (Sony) to PC and images show up blank in Camera wizard
and will not download. If I try to copy images in My Computer->Removable
Media they show up as blank jpg's and PC does not respond from then on. This
happened to a different camera (Canon) which I tried last week, too. Also
disabled all startup items and all other applications (except Windows WIA
Acquisition and SSDP Service) to no avail. Can't figure it out. I had no
problem DL images from Kodak camera using Kodak software on my PC. Using
XP/SP2.
