camera not recognized

when i try and capture some video from my camera the
computer wont play back my video. why wont it work?

Is this a digital or analog camcorder?

If digital and connected via firewire, is the camcorder turned ON and in VCR
mode?

If analog, what hardware and software are you using for the capture process?
