Camera as a "device with remavable storage" or a Hard Disk Drive

Thought I should start a new thread here.

I have a Kodak Camera that came bundled with Kodak Easyshare software.

With ES installed but not activated(running) and the camera plugged directly
to a USB port, the camera(DX6440)is seen as a Hard Disk Drive F: in My
Computer.

I cannot import to Digital Image Pro except through copying from F: to my
picture folders. Not a terribly onerous task, but.........why do it the long
way 'round if there is an easier method?

If ES is running, it becomes the default download app. I don't like its
storage features so leave it off.

With ES uninstalled, the Camera is seen as a "Camera" in Cameras and Scanners
and importing to DIP and other apps like Office and Jasc PSP is available.

I prefer the second scenario for obvious reasons but quite often I export
edited and sorted pictures from My Pictures folders to a spare Camera card for
use with my Photo Viewer on the TV.

I cannot find a way to transfer pictures back to the Camera when it is seen as
a "Camera".

I have tried all the fixes Yves suggests to get Windows XP to recognize the
camera as a "Device with removable storage" which should allow me to transfer
back to the camera card and be available for importing pictures to DIP(best of
both worlds).

Any ideas out there? Is it possible to change Windows' recognition of the
"camera" to a "device".

Thanks, Gord

I'm thinking the simplest solution may be
a USB memory card reader. Couldn't
you drag/drop files to and from it? And
you should be able to access it from the
Digital Image Pro file browser. That would
save your camera batteries also.

John

That's too easy<g>

But maybe the route I will have to go in order to have the mix and match I
prefer.

Just one more anomaly here.

The Camera is recognized in My Computer as a Hard Disk Drive yet in
SysInfo>Hardware>Device Manager it is an "Imaging Device".

Thanks, Gord

Don't know much about Kodak Easy Share so I can't comment on this.
However, I can tell you this much: if you edit a photo file (any kind of
editing, even just changing the file name) this will prevent the camera from
reading the edited file and display it on the LCD of the camera or sending
it to your TV via video out option of your camera. This has nothing to do
with Kodak Easy Share system, it is true for any camera. Cameras have a
little "limited computer" for storage on memory card and they can display on
their LCD or transmit via video out to a TV only original files.

Sorry, but I can't explain that. Maybe
Yves can offer some clues.

Yves

I don't show the photos on TV directly from the camera or view the edited
photos on the LCD.

I know what you mean about not seeing an edited photo on the LCD.

I just insert the card in my Sandisk Digital Photo Viewer which is plugged
into the TV.

I have had no problem downloading photos from the camera to HDD, doing any
editing I wish, including re-naming, re-sizing for example, then re-loading to
the camera's External card and having Photo Viewer show them on TV.

The camera is not a factor other than taking the original photos and holding
the 256MB card.

Yes, this does work just fine. But many use their camera to play back and
have been surprised by this. Some camera manuals warned about this while
others do not.
