Hello,

I have a new PC that was delivered with XP home pre-installed. I'd like to
use Movie Maker but when I try to import any audio or video I get the "class
not registered" error message.

I've searched a lot and found the instructions, batch files, and lines
relating to regsrvr32 and have run them all with no joy.

I have media player 10 and nero 6.x installed. Both work at playing anything
that I through at them. Nero even has a similar editing tool that works as
well but I'd like to try out Movie Maker.

Any ideas?

I thought about re-installing Movie Maker but there is no way to do it
without an SP2 install and that was already installed with XP Home on my new
PC.

Any ideas on how to re-install Movie Maker?

No guarantees...but it might be worth
a try to run the following command.

Go to...Start / Run...and type (or copy / paste)
the following...

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdv.dll
(yes, there's a space between the first 2 and %)

Press Enter.

You should see a dialog that says:

DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\qdv.dll succeeded

I did this, perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough in my original post, to
no avail.

Is the only way to re-install movie maker to reinstall sp2?

If I reinstall sp2 will I have reinstall all of the updates that were
released after and that I installed allready?

Will windows update know this?

If any updates from Windows Update are
required after reinstalling SP2...the scanner
at the update site will identify them.

Ok, on another tack does anyone know the registry entries for Movie Maker?

Perhaps they weren't entered or crushed by something else.

with this info I could enter or edit them back to default (if this is the
problem).

Hi

I have a batch file to re register the core system dlls used by WMM:
http://www.rehanfx.org/utils/reregdlls.bat

Close as many programs as you can before executing.

Since Movie Maker is a system component the registry entries used by Movie
Maker are quite varied. You can use RegMon utility from www.SysInternals.com
to see all of these. I suspect this wont lead you anywhere tho.

Try re-installing:

Windows Media Player
Windows Media Encoder
and the latest video drivers.

The first two should fix any issues with WMV file types.
