I jus downloaded callahan's crosstime saloon from home of the
underdogs. I try to run the game, but the screen becomes blank and all
I hear is music.

You will need to read all the FAQ's on the Underdogs site. I believe
they also have a forum. The problem is directly connected to trying to
run an ancient game in emulation in XP. If you love old games, consider
installing virtual software such as Virtual PC or VMWare and creating a
virtual machine running the older operating system instead.

If the game runs on DOS, the best virtualization tool you can get is Dosbox.

Virtualization can be very expensive in terms of processing power, so the
game might run slower than you expect (although there are things you can
do about this).
