I have made a meeting a "private meeting" by mistake, and now I cannot remove
it, or change it. I cannot find any instructions in "help" that tell me what
to do to remove it from the private status.

You need to remove the Private flag, typically by opening it on removing the
check mark or clicking the Private button.

What version of Outlook? What happens when you try to remove it?
