I'm trying to help my mom get her computer working.
The computer, after sitting for a bit, would simply freeze, requiring a
reboot. Also, the cable modem required it to be unplugged before an
internet connection could be made.

They are running Windows XP, Cable Modem (charter).

They had tons of viruses which I cleaned out. I also ran spybot and
adaware, and installed Zone Alarm. All that stuff seems to be cleaned out
ok.

I then removed the screen saver, I didn't see a power saver or hibernate
option marked to run.

The computer no longer freezes after removing the screensaver. However,
after a time, the internet connection is gone, requiring a reboot and
unplugging the modem.
I will get the modem model tonight. But is there anything else I should be
looking at to figure this out? She had called Charter, and they said from
what they could tell, all was well.

This could be your mother's isp, cable service has
amplifiers along the cable to boost the signal one of
these could be out call the first, When a modem is first
powered on it sends a very strong signal to connect with
the server over time this signal weakens on its own
