cable connection

i have an ibm laptop t20. i use cable connection and have
xp. i cant get rid of beeping that is allways there but
in no specific patter, when i look on the back of my
laptop , i see the cable connection. sometimes i see a
flashing green light sometimes a brown light, coul dthis
be the cause?
