Cable connection keeps on dropping

Couple of days my LinkSys router fried, so I had to connect my computer
directly to the cable modem. Ever since then, the connection drops whenever
there's an inactivity for a certain period of day (let's say 20mins). To
re-establish the connection, I have to do a 'ipconfig /release and /renew'.
It's very annoying. Any ideas how I can diagnoise this problem.

TIA

What was the reason your router "fried"? It could be anything from a
software problem caused by your computer to a hardware problem caused by a
power surge. It could be within your house (modem or computer) or it could
be outside (cable box not sending out a decent signal). I would call the
cable company and ask them.

RS, My router didn't literally fried. It just doesn't work all of a
sudden, despite that all the lights are on.

Couple days ago when I lost my internet connection, the 1st thing I did was
to log onto the router, but I was unable to do it. So, I know something is
funky there. I then exclude the router in my setup, everything seems to
work again. At the time, I was pretty sure that it was the router. I'm not
so sure now, because my PC is also acting funky (drops connection when
there's inactivity for a period of time). Could it be the network card or
even a virus?

TIA

Could be. Why not slip in your hardware diagnostic utility to check your
hardware? I would still call your cable company and ask them if there is
anything funky on their end. Do you have another computer you can test? If
another computer has the same problem, it is your ISP's problem, not yours.
Have you done anything that would merit your justification of a virus? What
AV software are you running?

I have a XP box and a Win98 box. They both couldn't connect through the
router. The built-in "hardware diagnostic utility" of XP says that my NIC
card is working properly. I run Norton, AVG and Spybot on a daily basis.

I had an bad incident with the CoolSearch virus previously, and ended up
formating one of the machines. Recently, I had a similar incident. I shut
that questionable box permanently (until I have time to deal with it). That
box is not shared. I wonder if a virus can still make its way through.
BTW, are there any virus that attack routers?

TIA

You might check the Power Management tab for your NIC properties in device
manager and make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power" is not selected.
