My new c300 Hp Compaq laptop shows only 248mb ram instead of 256mb (In
system properties window). What is the reason for this?

You computer has a video card built into the motherboard. The motherboard then assigns 8 MB of the
RAM to this video card an you only have 256 MB left for the Operating System. Welcome Compaq
design.

Instead of having a separate video card, your motherboard has on-board video
support and uses 8MB of system RAM for that purpose.
