No, I don't believe so. Access to the administrative share is
available only to administrators, and you'd have to turn off Simplified
File Share to allow normal file permissions to obtain.

And there's no such thing as an "xp server," anyway. WinXP is strictly
a workstation (client) operating system..

"XP Server" - never heard of that product. Windows XP comes in many
flavors - and some people do install it and use it as a file server or web
server in some case - although hopefully they understand that Windows XP is
not a server class operating system and has limitations. Is that what/why
you are referring to a 'xp server' in your posting?

Which version of Windows XP do you have?
- Windows XP Home Edition
- Windows XP Professional Edition
- Windows XP Tablet PC Edition (superset of Professional)
- Windows XP Media Center Edition (superset of Professional)
- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
- Windows XP 64-bit Edition
- Windows XP Embedded
- Windows XP Starter Edition
- Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs

To answer your query:
How to configure file sharing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

Specifically:
"When Simple File Sharing is turned on, remote administration and remote
registry editing does not work as expected from a remote computer, and
connections to administrative shares (such as C$) do not work because all
remote users authenticate as Guest. Guest accounts do not have
administrative rights. When Simple File Sharing is turned on, if you
configure specific user ACEs, remote users are not affected when Simple File
Sharing is turned on because all remote users authenticate as Guest when
Simple File Sharing is turned on."

Admin Shares are in any case a classic example of Microsoft's policy of
'clever features over security' - You really are better off without them.

It is very rarely necessary to share the whole of a disk, and even where it
is, giving automatic access to all Adminstrator accounts is unwise.
