C: drive installed in another computer does not show up in explorer

I have found on several occasions that when I put a C:
drive from one Windows XP computer into another computer
as a slave, to recover data, I can not see the drive in
explorer. I can see the drive in disk manager but the
only option available to me is to delete the partition.
How do I resolve this problem and recover the data?
