I have windows XP Pro (SP2) with all of the current MS security upgrades on
my Dell Dimension 8200 computer. Is it same to periodically delete the
contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder?

Hi Sammy,
Yes, it is save to delete, but the system will create these folders back
after rebot, why?.
simply next you pay a visit or the updates manager start will look and read
these folder to decide which updates you have on your system root and avoid
duplicate it again and again on your system.
Why you are asking?, are in a shortage of space?.
Run Disk Cleanup, look in the add/Remove for Hidden treasure that unwanted
or no use to them any more, remove them and defrag in safe mode.

Nass and PA Bear, thanks very much for your replies. I have plenty of space
on my primary HD but am approaching the point of not being able to burn just
one DVD for image backups of this primary HD (I use Symantec Livestate
Desktop Recovery Program). My understanding is that my image program will
burn more than one DVD and restore them without difficulty. However to keep
things more in my favor, I prefer to keep the image backup to one DVD if
reasonably possible. So I am looking at various places to safely delete
files so as to maintain a primary HD size at a specific amount or lower.

I use PurgeIE, check all the temp folders, and defrag at least weekly. I am
also considering deleting some of the minor software programs that I don't
use very often. Probably the most immediate way is to reduce size would be
to remove some of the data folders from the computer desktop. However this
would reduce multiple advantages for important data backups in my current
setup mode and add some additional manual steps to accomplish the same
desired backup effectiveness. I also keep the System Restore folder size
very small and that has helped a lot. I should note that the current size
of my primary partition is approximately 786gb. I accomplish a daily data
backup (AKGBackup program) to the secondary internal physical HD, a weekly
image backup to the internal secondary physical HD and then a monthly image
and data backup to an external USB HD, and a DVD burn for both image backup
and data backup. Thanks again for your replies, Sam.

P.S My backup procedures are probably bit excessive, but last year I had a
primary HD that had began to fail and it was so nice to be able to have a
successful and quick restore, without loss of important data and having to
go thru the whole routine of a complete OS and other software programs
installs. That made me a believer about having current and dependable
backups procedures and programs!!
