If all you want to do is update your current version of Windows to SP3 then
all you have to do is download the file to upgrade it to SP3 or order it on
CD.

XP Pro is more expensive than XP Home, and chances are that Home will do
the trick.

If you want to buy a current, new XP CD (Home or Pro), you don't have
any choice. You may only purchase a generic OEM version of XP (and the
current versions *do* have SP3); retail versions have stopped coming
out. It is possible, however, to purchase an old retail version of XP
from a reputable dealer. But if you have no plans on transferring XP to
another machine, then you might as well purchase the OEM version, which
is considerably less expensive than retail.

What kind of PC do you currently use, and what operating system do you
have on it? It is also possible to purchase another kind of retail
version of XP (and again, since they are no longer coming out, you need
to find a reputable dealer for a legit used one), which is called an
Upgrade version (as opposed to the Full version). That would work in
case you wanted to upgrade something like Windows 98 or ME. It's a litle
bit more than a generic OEM CD but much less than the Full retail CD.
Also, unlike the OEM license, you are permitted to transfer it to
another PC in the future.

Don't waste your money! The 1.6 Intel Dual Core CPU is still a *single*
processor. It just happens to have a dual *core*. XP Home will work just
as well on it!

I strongly recommend the Retail Upgrade, not the Retail Full, and not
the OEM version. Although if you get a complete generic OEM version,
it contains the same software, its license ties it permanently to the
first computer it's installed on. It can never legally be moved to
another computer, sold, or given away (except with the original
computer). That means that if the computer dies, your Windows license
dies too.

The reason I recommend the Retail Upgrade over the Full is that it's
much cheaper and the requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own*
a previous qualifying version's installation CD, not to have it
installed. When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version
installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership.
Just insert the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts.
Everything proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

Most people already own a previous qualifying version, but worst case
if you don't, you can inexpensively buy a copy of Windows 98 someplace
like eBay.

Professional costs considerably more than Home, and unless you need to
join a domain (except for those people in large corporations or
universities, most people don't), Home is just as good for almost
everyone.

Where to buy it? A google search will turn up many sources, for
example, Amazon.com.

Before you purchase it, you should still indicate the make and model of
this PC (and its specs) and what operating system it came with. You need
to determine if it is appropriate (or even possible) to run XP on it.
