Dear all,

I have a problem that is driving me mad and although I don’t have a clue to
the solution I hope one of you experts can help.

I have dozens of home digital videos on my hard drive and I want to copy
these to disk and play them on my DVD player. The problem is I only have a cd
rewritable drive and therefore can only use 700mb cd-rw disk and some of the
videos/home movies are much bigger than this in size.

In my ignorance I thought if I bought some 4.7 gb 120 DVD-r disks , I could
use these and all my problems would be over..Alas I was wrong as my computer
could not even read or recognize these disks. , let alone copy my videos to
them.

Therefore I was wondering if its somehow possible for me to either shrink
these movies so that I can fit them unto my 700mb disk or if there is some
other way around this problem. I am completely useless so I would be grateful
if any replies could include idiot instructions, such as what software I need
to use and a step by step breakdown of the process I would need to follow.

The simplest solution by far is to replace your CD writer with a DVD writer.
They can be had for less than £20 these days.

You would also require some authoring software to produce the DVD discs in
the correct format, but the chances are that the drive will come bundled
with something suitable.

As you discovered...a CD Burner cannot burn a DVD.
Your best bet may be to have a DVD Burner installed.

Regardless of the file size...just burning your video files
on a CD will not create a disk that a DVD Player will
recognize. And BTW...Video disks are rendered based
on duration not file size.

However...you might consider creating VCDs (Video CDs)
many free standing DVD players will play a VCD. You might
check the manual for your DVD Player and see if VCDs are
compatible.

To create a VCD you need a Blank CD, a CD Burner and
Authoring software that can create a VCD.

Proceed at your own risk

Your best best is to upgrade to DVD Burner unless you want to watch less
quality videos on your DVD player. Even if you make a SVCD you are not
guaranteed it will run on a DVD Player because not all of them can handle
this format for viewing.
