Hey all!

I broke down a bought a 6600 Duo core with a Gigabyte MB (P35C-DS3R)
and 1066 DDR2. Here's my problem....

The Dog Gone thing won't see the DVD Drive to install WinXP!!! I've
always used a Win98 start up disk for drivers (after installing
smartdrv.exe) to install my OS.

In this case, the BIOS Sees the DVD drive (tried 2 different drives)
but the start up disk can't find the MSCD001 driver.

WHAT THE HECK?!?!? That's worked forever! And it can't be the drive
because I've installed 2 different units.

What's going on here??!?!

Please help!

Thanks!

You know that if the CD drive is listed as the 1st boot device and you
insert the XP CD it will boot from the CD.......and the installation will
start.
There is no need to use 98.
Is the device listed on the BIOS screen when you boot???
Does the light on the Cd drive go on??

Your new mainboard uses a P35 chipset, which doesn't include an IDE
controller. The IDE controller is an add-on (listed as a Gigabyte part).

At a guess, the Win98 startup disk's drivers don't support the IDE
controller. I've seen something similar when I created a bootable
floppy-image CD: the floppy image itself booted OK, but the data partition
on it wasn't visible.

If your XP installation disk is bootable, I suggest booting directly from
that. (I was able to boot from a Vista 64 DVD on my Abit IP35 Pro based
system. That uses a JMicron controller.)

I imagine that there may be a way to install drivers for the IDE controller
on a DOS-like boot disk, but I have no idea how to do that.

Good luck.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn to reply.

Thanks guys! I finally got it to work! I WAS trying to "boot from
CD" but it wouldn't take (why I went to the old Win98 way..). Anyway,
it'd go from "Boot from CD" to "Invalid disk" in the matter of a
second or so. I hit enter as soon as I saw the former and it started
to go.

Thanks for the help! You time and advice is surely appreciated!

Take Care!!!!
