I will be building a new rig. I need to compile a list of the things I need
to complete this.

When you say "rig", are you talking about a truck or a PC?
If it's a PC you're asking about, you presumably know what
components go into a PC case. Which components do you
need clarification on?

Better start now and expect to revise your list daily until
you place your order. Then you'll be dissatisfied because
your parts will be obsolete before they are delivered.
A basic list includes some hand tools and all the parts to
make a functioning computer.
You have to decide what you want to do and then get the best
parts you can afford.

When I say rig, I was referring of course to a PC since this is a hardware
newsgroup.

I was looking for a checklist for components just to make sure I have
everything I need.

You'd be surprised about the strange posts that appear in this
group from time to time!

What items do you currently have in your check list?

I would also add these:
- Integrated network adapter on motherboard (or PCI adapter card)
- At least 2 but preferably 4 USB 2 sockets
- Make it at least 256 but preferably 512 MBytes RAM
- FDD
- Loudspeakers
- At least combo drive but preferably CD/DVD R/W
- Keyboard, optical mouse
- WinXP Professional

You're missing a few items and all that you have listed need better
descriptions to insure you're purchasing compatible products. Obviously you
have not done any research on the subject other than a cursory look. For
instance, you indicate an integrated sound chip will work. So you're not
into media editing or looking to play some music. A simple PCI graphics
card, so I would assume this will not be a high-end gaming system. The
dual-core CPU is in this case just a future insurance factor and really no
need for it now. Nothing to indicate that you need or want a performance
machine. Have you asked yourself:

1. How many PCI slots will you need for future cards such as sound cards,
game cards, USB/Firewire, etc.?
2. What is the main purpose of this PC? Just a run of the mill PC to surf
the net and do basic things? (Go buy an eMachine and save yourself some
grief)
3. Plan on using it for editing media - digital video, sound tracks etc.?
(Then you better study up a bit - it will change by next week)
4. What is your budget?
5. Does that include a monitor, LCD or analog and how big and what quality
will you need?
6. You'll need interconnecting cables, fans, cooling for CPU. A good case
(with sound absorption perhaps), good airflow design, fans a good power
supply, slots for extra hard drives.
7. Speakers (or sound system), keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, maybe a
drawing pad like a Wacom, game controller (wheel, joystick, foot-pedals) and
of course,
8. Software....lots of decisions

It can get confusing - so get the latest issue of the "Computer Shopper",
pick a system from there, order it and call it a day.
