Sorry for what is probably a simplistic question, but I've been going
through the web and having problems getting an answer.

I just got a notebook computer, and already have a desktop, and am now
trying to link them together, but with little success.

Here's what I had to begin with:
Desktop running XP Home, with two printers connected to it (all-in-one
and a photo printer), wired to a 802.11g wireless router (needed the
wireless in the old residence). The router is connected to a cable
modem (as well as an Xbox, and I may soon add a TIVO2).

So, now I have the notebook, with built in WiFi, and connecting to the
net is not a problem. But trying to run Network setup on both systems,
I can't get them to see each other (in fact, through the wireless
connection with the notebook, I lost the internet access with the
various network settings, I had to revert).

Basically, my goal is to be able to go through the desktop to print
from the notebook (i'd like to avoid buying a print server), and to be
able to swap a few files).

Is there any guidence folks could offer, or just point me to a decent
website that will go over how to get the computers up and running? Any
help is appreciated.

just some thoughts...

did you try connecting just one pc to the router, then getting to the net?

do you have firewalls or similar security software on any pcs? the FWs have
to be set to accept the other pc's card (ip assigned by router)

(i have no idea how xbox or tivo affects anything )

I think you need to install the protocol Netbuei over TCP/IP. It might
also be called TCPbuei or NetBT. (I can't find it as an option on my
dialog, perhaps because I am not using it)

For the longest time, I was trying to get my notebook to connect with my
desktop. I was using Norton Internet Security as my firewall. Little
did I know, it was interfering with the establishment of a connection.
Once I removed Norton Internet Security, everything was fine. So, make
sure you remove your firewall to set up your connection.

You can then research your firewall software to see how you can get it
to recognize each of the computers should you want to re-install it. I
didn't bother to re-install Internet Security.

BTW, you have to set your printer as "shared" before you can print
wirelessly.
