When scanning with MSASW 1.0.615 the scanning reaches
what seems like a deadlock when scanning ISTbar registry
entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. It simply keeps on
swallowing system resources (no interface updates) until
I get a virtual memory warning (and after that too).

It has happened every time I have tried scanning,
everything seems to stop (except for eating memory). Even
the animation stops, and the software is "Not Responding"
according to WinXP. It is the same no matter if I do the
Full System Scan or the Quick Scan. I've had to
forcefully shut down the software via Task Mgr.

did you try a scan in safe mode?
At boot press F8.

Tom is correct here the files are running while you are
trying to remove them which is causing you problems, Also
remove ISTsvc from the Add/Remove screen and program
files area

Download this removal tool from Symantec for ISTbar and
use it in safe mode with MS Antispy to clear the problem
