Hi !

I found what appears to be a bug in notepad.

Try the following (I've tryed in WinXP, Win2000 and Win2003):
1. Create a empty TXT file anywhere (right-click and select new TXT file)
2. Now, open it with notepad, and write the text
"OM_fulfilment_script.vbs ola adeus" (without the quotes, and no Enter in the
end)
3. Save and Close
4. Now open it with notepad. You'll see only "squares"

I've tryed in Dutch, English, German and Portuguese computers, with
different locales, and the result is always the same...

Looks like the file gets automatically saved in Unicode, only when this
combination of text is present (you can see that when, after following the
previous steps, you do a "Save as", and see it appearing in the "Enconding"
as Unicode, which normally is ANSI).
Of course, if you open it in Wordpad, you'll see the correct contents of
the file...

I see this with a very low probability of happening again (this week I'm
betting in the lottery!!), but still may be a bug that can occur with other
text combinations.

Maybe there'll be a patch for this (?)

Cheers,
Hugo

Sounds like a simple solution: Don't put "OM_fulfilment_script.vbs ola
adeus" in notepad.

No, the file does not get saved in Unicode although its
content may get interpreted as Unicode. Use a binary
editor to examine it in detail.

This bug is so severe that you should consider replacing
WinXP with a different OS. Immediately!

It doesn't happen in Vista RTM, English. I don't know about XP, I don't
have it started at the moment.

When I do it, the language appears to get changed to Japanese. Doesn't
matter what encoding I use to Save. If I simply save the file after putting
in the text, doesn't matter in what encoding, and then open it in WordPad,
it looks correct. If I open it in Notepad, it appears in Japanese, and if I
save that and then open in WordPad, it also appears in Japanese. I'm
assuming that the Japanese instead of "squares" is because I have all
language packs installed.

Interesting. Also interesting is how you came up with this. How did you?

Pure luck... :S

I was developing a VBS script, and wanted to test it, using a .bat file.
On the next day, when I edited the file, I saw those "squares", and thought
the file has been corrupted.
But double-clicking the file, executed just fine (?).

Maybe there are other text combinations that provide the same result (?),
but this was just some damn "luck"...
