Ed - this might be a result of an incomplete install of Microsoft
Antispyware, rather than interference with the installer, per se.
Can you try:
Start, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, Change, Update.
See if that changes the behavior--try something with a quick install!
If not, try removing Microsoft Antispyware, and then reinstalling it.
Does Microsoft Antispyware otherwise seem to be complete and working in all
the aspects you've tried out?
