Ladies/Gentlemen -
A problem that has vexed me for months has suddenly presented itself with a
solution. I am unsure which of these three groups best handles this
situation, it relates to all three, please remove a crosspost if it is not
germain to the group.
System:
AMD762 Chipset Dual Athlon - MSI K7D motherboard
More than one user reports this problem.
Symptom:
When other machines pull files from this system running Windows 2000 (file
sharing, backing up from central server), the system will eventually hard
freeze - no mouse, no blue screen, no event log, no crash dump.
Remedies attempted:
Various changes to Lanmanserver parameters, three different network cards in
three different PCI slots, changed network speed and duplex, etc.
Workaround:
The freeze does NOT occur if you plug a PS/2 mouse into the system.
Postscript:
This seems to result from some bug perhaps in how the OS polls the PS/2 port
and handles it's absence. How can I report this to Microsoft to alleviate
the need to leave a mouse plugged into the PS/2 port for correct operation?
Thanks,
Venger
P.S.2. Thanks to Cronos at 2cpu.com for posting his solution to this obtuse
problem
