simple steps to keeping the PC clean, safe and running

Anti-Virus:
Anyone who is online must have anti-virus software. Some
viruses are almost harmless, some
you won't even know were there, others will destroy your
system and all the information
on it. You can purchase an anti-virus program at any
computer store or you can download

add/remove programs in the system control panel. Make
sure you know what the
program is and that you don't need it before you
uninstall it.

Defragging:

Defragging your hard drive cleans up files and makes
programs run faster and more efficiently.
Your operating system will come with a defragging
utility. It doesn't need to be updated but
make sure you use it on a regular basis.

Update:

If you use windows make sure you keep it up to date. They
make these updates for a reason
so use them.They fix many flaws and help with a lot of
things. Windows XP has a very
easy to use update system. Make sure update all other
programs on your computer.
Make sure you also update Games, Anti-virus software,
P2P, and media payers for
optimal performance. Updates are there for a reason. USE
THEM!

Conclusion:

Follow this list and your online experience will be a lot
more enjoyable. A little maintenance
will go along way to prolonging the life of your PC. It
may seem like a lot at first but your
PC is a very complicated piece of hardware and when
things get complicated, things go
wrong. It's a small price to pay to protect you
investment.

On the whole, not bad advice, except for a couple parts.

Having often seen the results of inexperienced people using
automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise people to avoid them
all.

The only thing needed to safely clean your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, you also lack the knowledge and experience
to safely configure and use any automated registry cleaner, no matter
how safe they claim to be.

I always use Regedit.exe. I trust my own experience and judgment
far more than I would any automated registry cleaner.

Also, the so-called "all-in-one" utilities are not really
necessary. I know of nothing they do that cannot already be
accomplished using WinXP's built-in tools.
