Further to posting of 29/06/07 when I got this BSOD

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (OX81765AF8,0XSC0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I am now trying to reinstall windows as the repair option just kept
rebooting and going round in circles and now whilst installing windows I get
this BSOD:

STOP:

Unknown Hard Error

Not looking good eh?

How exactly are you trying to reinstall XP? Are you booting from the XP CD?
I would expect that error to show up after XP is installed when trying to
boot, not during the process of installation. So are you not giving us all
the details?

http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm
0xC000021A: STATUS_SYSTEM_PROCESS_TERMINATED

Have you tested the hard drive with a drive diagnostic utility from the
drive manufacturer's web site?

It's showing up during the installation from the CD as far as I can make
out. I don't know what HD is installed. We have no documentation as a
neighbour sold it to us.

Is it a commercial/OEM PC ? ( Gateway, HP, Dell ) if so you can
locate it's unique Service Tag # and use that on the vendor's web
site to get it's original factory configuration. The information should
be on the back of a desktop or on the bottom of a notebook. All
OEM PCs are required to place the Windows COA ( Certificate
of Authenticity ) on the physical case. This will have your product
key for installing XP.

If not a major OEM PC ( But an independent shop built PC) did
your neighbor provide the original disks/documentation ? Instead
of a repair or in-place upgrade you really need to restore it to it's
factory condition. ALL OEMs are required to provide a means of
restoring a PC to it's original/delivered state.

Open the case and look, or use the Seagate Seatools. You can also try
HDtune. It could be a variety of problems: the CD, the CD drive, the
motherboard, the hard drive, etc.

I have had dirty, scratched or defective CDs do that, as well as dirty CD
players.
If you eliminate all of those, then check the HDD.
One of the easiest tools is the bootable CD from
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
It has HDD tools, a memory tester, AV, etc.
