I get the following message when I try to install Vista on a brand new system:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

Two thoughts: First, are you installing 32-bit or 64-bit Vista?
Hardware drivers are the most likely reason for your problem either way,
but drivers for 64-bit installs are far more problematic than the 32-bit
drivers (or so I've read).

Second, you didn't say if the hard disk is SATA or not. If so, you most
likely will need to supply a SATA driver. Otherwise, the graphics
driver is the most likely candidate.
